(A thoughtful piece in favor of Obama. If you're a Hillary Clinton supporter, please take the time to post a diary explaining why, and I'll put in on the front page. - promoted by Isaac Smith)
Too many times, I have been burned by politicians, such that I have been reluctant to "endorse" candidates for high office this year. But I'll risk disappointment and major league cynical buyer's remorse, and endorse Senator Obama for the presidency here. |

If you don't know what to write to get your friends, including your out-of-state friends with friends and family here, to support the proposed Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act (SB 290/HB 351), consider copying, pasting, editing appropriately and sending to good friends and family. This will not be an easy bill to pass but it will be easier to pass this year than when moral courage is more expensive in 2010 for moderate Dems especially around Baltimore, elected officials who don't want to be bigoted but don't want to be terrorized either by anti-gay fanatics. These good men and women need backbone, and voices in their district giving them support when the likes of Don Dwyer are whipping them, sending them hate mail, picketing their houses, etc. ARE their backbone, both politically and in terms of moral courage. It takes a lot for, for example, a Catholic delegate from a purple district in Baltimore County to sign on on this one, especially if the Archbishop or people from his parish will be lobbying him. He or she needs to know that we - WE - will have his or her back, all the way. We need to BE that backbone. Enough speech. Here's the pitch to your cousin Jane or your former roommate at Towson. |

There are a number of ways to respond to derogatory comments and tropes from arch-conservatives. Those who know my style will not be surprised to learn my preference for the direct approach. |

A call to arms in support of decency, autonomy and justice. PLEASE NOTE AND ALERT: may be a severe TRIGGER EVENT for multiple forms of PTSD for assault survivors or others. Posted here as well as at Daily Kos because Maryland is as vulnerable to the issues involved with sexual violence as any where else, style may reflect Kossack-ese, so to speak, and because this fine blog with its largely male contributor base can benefit from more exposure to the realities that women face. |

I did the unthinkable and changed my registration from Libertarian to Democratic this week. I hope I make a fine a group of friends among the Dems as I enjoyed for 12 years as a Libertarian. It's a little painful to say goodbye, but I did it. |

Maryland is a blue state, let there be no mistake. But its Court of Appeals, equivalent to most states' Supreme Courts, is a relatively conservative institution, despite the blue politics of the state. I had expected the three dissenters to go as they did, but expected them to have two of the more moderate judges (in MD, we don't call them "justices") join them. Instead, it went 4-3 against the plaintiffs. Interestingly, two of the judges in the majority are about to retire, as will one of the 3 who joined part of the dissent (Judge Raker). So Maryland's governor will have some interesting appointments ahead of him. |

Baltimore Sun, June 24, 2007:
Old black-and-white photos show the place back when Rose and George Brous bought it in 1963. The Flamingo Motel was a flat cinderblock rectangle, sitting on the sand. Twenty-three rooms on three floors, each with a pair of double beds and a phone - no TV - cooled only by the sea breeze. |

Baltimore Sun, June 2, 2007: A leading Baltimore developer would receive more than $33 million in city tax breaks to build a landmark headquarters for Legg Mason at an exclusive waterfront address, officials close to the proposed deal confirmed yesterday.
...
As (developer) Paterakis developed Harbor East over the past decade, he benefited from tax breaks on nearly every phase of the project. The development transformed what was once an industrial no man's land to one of Baltimore's trendiest areas, with a Whole Foods market, expensive boutiques and exclusive apartments and condos.
...
Legg Mason announced in February that it planned to leave its signature skyscraper at 100 Light St., the tallest building in the city, for the new Harbor East digs. Legg expects to move nearly all of its Baltimore-area employees to the new building by 2009, creating a significant vacancy in its former home in downtown's core. |

[NOTE: while this is not specifically a Maryland issue, it has implications for Maryland no less than for the rest of the United States.]
One of the most ironic things about religion is its capacity to make men and women either a lot more humble or a lot more arrogant. In dealing with a government, of course, it's the arrogation of power and the infliction of damage upon the innocent with which we should be concerned. If religion made men consistently more humble, more decent, more mature, all of us would have far less reason to fear it as a mode or tool of governance. |

Isaac was kind enough include on the front page of this brilliant SoapBlox site a link to Crabopedia, which is a small but growing wiki for Maryland politics, life and history hosted by my ongoing Crab Media activities. My hope is to start a discussion on how FSP diarists, commentators, etc., may choose to use Crabopedia for research, storage, community access and organizing of information about Maryland politics and policy issues. |
